News Project: The Conflict between Taiwan and Philippines --The Disputation across the Sea

Our opinions about  the conflict between Taiwan and Philippines

In Taiwan, June 18, 2013

After the Philippine people shot the Taiwanese fishermen, it brought about many problems, which are originally hidden below the sea. The conflict touched many aspects, such as the safety problem of the fishermen, and the diplomatic policies.

This event also caused many discussions on the web. Some people were influenced by the mass media, which could arouse the public’s emotion. They had fierce opinions, and even stroke others by using terrible words.

After analyzing the comments on the web, we can know most of people talked about the human right, especially about fishermen, diplomatic issues, and the process of the investigation. The different attitudes of Taiwanese and Philippines are also noticed by people.

Taiwanese hope Philippines to face this event squarely, and not to escape the responsibility. However, Philippines’ slow and indirect reaction had caused the anger of many Taiwanese. Philippine officials thought they may be innocent. The neutrals said, “It is not worthy to break the relationship between Taiwan and Philippines, because of this event.” Now, diplomatic relationship between Taiwan and Philippines becomes nervous.

This event could affect our lives a lot, from countries’ policies to daily supplies. We should learn from the experience, and learn how to really understand the deeper aspects of events. Don’t let your emotion be easily affected by the public!

News Project: Individual Report 2

Figure 1: We and our poster

Figure 2: The process of making the poster

After the discussion on the class this week, we came up with the title of the news: The conflict between Taiwan and Philippines-- Why are Taiwanese so angry? And we chose one video on YouTube: 2 Minutes, One Fact—What Philippine Government did and Said to Taiwan, which was podcasted on May 16, 2013. We will post our messages on the forum to join the discussion and analyze the previous comments. We want to see the different aspects of the problems in Taiwan, such as the safety of the fisherman, and the diplomatic policies.

    We want to know:
1. Why do so many people comment on this news?
2. What are the main categories of those comments?
3. What do Taiwanese dispute about?
4. What are the effects of this news?
5. What can we learn through this news?

After the poster merry-go-round, some classmates talked to us why the title is Why
are Taiwanese so angry. Does it not a normal reaction? Our thought is the similar event had happened with America, but the Taiwanese reactions were not the same as this one. Therefore, we want to explore the real reason of Taiwanese anger. There are too many things influencing the public, such as the mass media, which easily makes people go out of control. The reasons of anger can be different for each individual. Everyone’s angle about this event is not the same. We will improve the problems the classmates proposed on the class and arrange these things in order to see the deeper aspect of this event.

News Project: Individual Report 1

We want to talk about the news of Philippine people shooting Taiwan fishermen. Most people have seldom noticed the important news, such as global news. The news on TV and newspapers in Taiwan hardly help us broaden and cultivate our global view. The terrible society news and helpless entertainment one are full of the Taiwanese newspapers. When we face the trouble about the international position, it is a big problem that we will be treated with unfairness. There are many emotional comments from the public after this murder event, but we cannot neglect the important things that are the follow-up solutions and effects.

We will analyze the attitude and reactions of the people in different countries on websites. A video we will shoot contains the different viewpoints for this event. All of us may be on behalf of four countries, such as Taiwan, Philippines, America, and China. We can see the interesting relationship among them.

I think that we can add the discussion about the Philippine labors. After this event, they are also the victims. They do not do the wrong things, but some of them are bullied in Taiwan. If we are angry at this murder event and Philippine official attitude, we couldn’t do the same thing like harming innocent people. It is an important issue worthy of reflecting.

and build the confidence in your mind--

When experiencing the change from unhandy eyeglasses to ordinary contact lenses, people who want to be more beautiful find out the new fashion: circle lenses.

Nowadays, more and more people with high prescription, especially young girls, choose to wear circle lenses to make eyes look much bigger.

Peer influences have played a central role. “When seeing my classmates wearing circle lenses, I started to wear circle lenses,” stated Ms. Chen, a freshman of NCU who wore the maxi skirt with curly long hair, from which we can know she is a trendy. “And I am used to wearing circle lenses. I have no sense of security without wearing circle lenses.”

“When wearing circle lenses, I feel my eyes becoming bright and piercing,” declared Ms. Huang, the 19-year-old student in NCU. “But, compared with common contact lenses, circle lenses easily make my eyes dry.”

Although people know that wearing circle lenses is harmful to eyes, many people still wear circle lenses. Being more beautiful is humans’ natural instinct, so everyone keeps pursuing advanced methods to make him or her more beautiful.

We cannot keep people from wearing circle lenses. However, think about how long you have made eye contact without true eyes!

Koa-a-hi: Temporary Fanaticism or Lasting Success? (Extra Revision)

Figure 1: The new special effects in Koa-a-hi

Figure 2: The traditional type of Koa-a-hi in the Taiwan's opera

In Taiwan, Apr. 29, 2013

--The smoke coils up, the light gradually dims, and the performers swing the fireballs. The ordered dance steps, the spurting water, and the performers sway the sleeves.--

The scene described above is the transformation of Koa-a-hi, the Taiwan’s opera.

In the declining period of Taiwanese opera, the troupes combine the traditional play with the new special effects, because they want to make more people notice this antique art.

“Taiwan’s opera is different from the ordinary dramas. Its change caters to the most tastes,” Ms. Chang, the student in NCU, said. “I like the Western type of Taiwanese opera because of its new visual effects.”

And so was Ms. Lin, also the student in NCU having the positive opinion. She thought that the combination of the tradition and the modernism is more attractive than something only new.

Not all the people support the transformation, while some people have different comments on the modification. The 19-year-old female student, Ms. Lai, directly declared, “The special effects are so exaggerated that we only focus on the special effects not the opera itself.”

Taiwan’s opera is just an unfamiliar term to most young people, because they have never seen and deeply understood this traditional art. With the obstacle of language and the gap of generation, Taiwanese opera gradually disappears in the young generation.

The Western type of Taiwan’s opera can only appeal to some audiences temporarily. Whether this tradition can be preserved or not lies in everyone’s attitude to it.

The interesting extent of the content ( from 1 to 5) 4
Other sourcesYes
Special angleYes
The tension of the content& endingNo

The following are the comments my group members gave to me:

1. The lead and headline are not attractive

2. The content should have the turning point

3. The pictures should be bigger

Therefore, I did my best to incorporate these three points in the revision to make the news better and interesting:

1. Put the description of the special effects and opera's movements; think out another headline

2. Mention the decline of Taiwan's opera

3. Make the pictures more bigger

Is the Transformation of Taiwan's Opera Successful ? (Revision)

The different type in Taiwan's opera

The Taiwanese, Apr. 8, 2013

In recent years, Taiwan’s opera has changed the type of performances.
The troupes of Taiwanese opera combine the traditional play with the new special efficacy, because they want to make more people notice this antique art.
“Taiwan’s opera is different from the ordinary dramas. Its change caters to the most tastes,” Ms. Chang, the student in NCU, said. “I like the Western type of Taiwanese opera because of its special efficacy.”
And so was Ms. Lin, also the student in NCU having the positive opinion. She thought that the combination of the tradition and the modernism is more attractive than something only new.
Not all the people support the transformation, while some people have different comments on the modification. The 19-year-old female student directly declaimed, “The special efficacy is so exaggerated that we only focus on it not the opera itself.”
“Taiwan’s opera” is just an unfamiliar noun to most young people, because they have never seen and deeply understood this traditional art. With the obstacle of language and the gap of generation, Taiwanese opera gradually disappears in the young generation.
The Western type of Taiwan’s opera can only appeal to some audience temporarily. Whether this tradition can be preserved or not lies in everyone’s attitude to it.

Like It or Not : The Transformation of Taiwan's Opera

The new special efficacy in "The Legand
of The White Sanke" from Ming Hwa Yuan
In recent years, Taiwan’s opera gradually transforms the type of performance to Western one, such as Ming Hwa Yuan troupe. They add some special efficacy and new material into the performance, and hope to attract more audience. To young people, “Taiwan’s opera” is just an unfamiliar noun, because most of them have never seen this performance. “I am not interested with this traditional culture,” most interviewee replied. If there is no large-scale advertisement or propaganda, most people would not take the initiative to notice the messages of Taiwan’s opera. Due to the misunderstanding of the language, more and more young people do not go to see Taiwan’s opera, which will gradually disappear in the young generations. Some think that the change of Taiwan’s opera can cater to the multitude, while some think that the alteration would make the opera lose the original flavor and traditional atmosphere.

The traditional performig type of Taiwan' opera
“The new kind of performance would pique my interest to take a closer look,” one interviewee said.

“Some of the special efficacy is too exaggerated,” another interviewee told.

There are many different opinions to the transformation of Taiwan’s opera. If we want to preserve this precious traditional culture, we should come up with ideas about how to retain the original audience and appeal more other people.

Trational Culture: Taiwan's Opera

My issue is about Taiwan’s Opera, which is a traditional culture. It had been declining for a while. However, in recent year, Taiwan’s opera has gradually developed and progressed. For example, Ming Hwa Yuan, which is a famous troupe for Taiwan’s opera, is going to push it to the higher level. They add some special efficacy into the performances, which are different from the old type. They even go abroad to perform and make foreigners know this traditional culture.

I want to explore whether the change of Taiwan’s opera would appeal more people, especially the younger, or not, and do they consider it as a good change?
